Why e-labels matter for wine
EU wine labelling since 8 December 2023
Since 8 December 2023, wine and aromatised wine products placed on the EU market must carry an ingredient list and nutrition declaration (Regulation (EU) 2021/2117, amending Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013).
Under certain conditions, the full ingredient list and full nutrition declaration may be provided electronically – typically via a QR code on the label.
The European Commission notes that a normal marketing homepage or webshop is generally not a suitable host for mandatory information, because sales or marketing content and user tracking are often present.
What can be provided electronically
- Full ingredient list (including grapes and oenological compounds as required by EU rules)
- Full nutrition declaration (energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein, salt – per 100 ml)
- Tabular presentation without the space limits of a physical label
What must stay on the bottle
- Energy value (kJ and kcal per 100 ml; the label may use “E” for energy)
- Allergens – e.g. “Contains: sulphites” – directly on the packaging or label
- Other mandatory particulars: category, ABV, provenance, bottler/producer, PDO/PGI terms where applicable, and further items under Art. 119 Reg. (EU) No 1308/2013
- The word “Ingredients” in immediate proximity to the QR code when the ingredient list is electronic
Requirements for electronic provision
- No collection or tracking of user data (no analytics, no tracking cookies on the e-label page)
- Mandatory information must not be combined with sales or marketing content
- Direct access: scanning leads immediately to product information – no login, cookie banner, or intermediate pages
- A dedicated, neutral information page – not your normal website or webshop
- Information must remain available for the expected shelf life of the product
How the solution works
Set up your own e-labels.at instance, create an e-label for your wine, maintain ingredients and nutrition in the admin interface, and publish the public page. The generated QR code points to your own domain.
Why self-hosting can make sense for wine
A dedicated e-label instance on your own domain meets the requirement for information separate from marketing – without dependency on a central SaaS platform.
You keep control of URLs, operation, and data. There are no recurring software licence fees – you only pay for your own server.
Self-hosting does not automatically mean legal certainty or blanket GDPR compliance. That also depends on how you operate and configure your server.
Not a Digital Product Passport
Wine e-labels are not Digital Product Passports under the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2024/1781. Food is explicitly outside the scope of the Digital Product Passport. Wine e-labels serve to provide food information under EU wine law.
Wine e-labels in Austria
In Austria, EU rules apply directly. The Bundeskellereiinspektion and WKO have published guides – especially on QR code placement, allergen labelling, and the word “Ingredients” next to the code.
An Austrian server location is optionally possible – for example netcup Vienna – but is not a legal requirement for labelling.

Frequently asked questions about wine e-labels
Do I have to print ingredients and nutrition on the label?
Not necessarily. Under certain conditions, both may be provided fully electronically. The physical label must still show at least energy value and allergens – plus all other mandatory particulars under EU wine law.
Can I use my normal winery website as the e-label?
Generally not advisable. The European Commission and Austrian authorities note that marketing websites and webshops typically contain sales content or tracking – both are not permitted for mandatory electronic information.
May I use analytics on the e-label page?
No. When ingredients and nutrition are provided electronically, user data must not be collected or tracked.
Does this apply to Austrian wineries?
Yes. Austria applies EU wine law directly. Check the Bundeskellereiinspektion and WKO guides for practical implementation.
Am I automatically compliant with e-labels.at?
No. e-labels.at is a technical tool. As the producer, you remain responsible for correct and complete information.
